Silencio Beithak @Club Silencio, Paris
The artist duo of myself and Lebanese illustrator Olivia Brazier Fattal presented an unconventional Beithak at the Silencio Club. Through reappropriation of space and juxtaposition of culture, we explored traditional art and gathering in a feminist, post-colonialist frame. A shisha lounge was set up in the smoking room, and the club floor was covered with rugs. Onstage, the clichéd tale of One Thousand and One Nights was reappropriated through a sapphic gaze and animated by performances that demonstrated cultural fluidity between the Middle East and South Asia. An overhanging, shapeshifting moon accompanied us through the night, everpresent in Persian/Urdu poetry. The Beithak brought together the cinematic worlds of vintage Bollywood/Lollywood, and the smoldering surrealism of director David Lynch, the designer of the Silencio.
