Ladies first @Kayal, Karachi
Ladies first was an experimental pop-up exhibition and show that I organised alongside Pakistani printmaker, Fatima Shah, in Karachi. The show presented work from young, female Pakistani artists curated with a DJ set from Marium Masood. The show was held outdoors, in a courtyard at the woman owned textile studio, Kayal.
Curatorial statement | 02.03. 2024
Ladies First brings together a selection of young female artists whose work explores the experience of growing up female in Pakistan in its many facets. This shared cultural experience presents a juxtaposition of divinity and vulnerability. The nature of our society is such that when passing through a door, we decoratively insist on “ladies first” but in reality, women fall last when it comes to independence in public and private life, standards of beauty, and bodily autonomy.
