A 3D calligraphy piece exploring the Sufi concept of discovering the divine through human love. We see divine attributes in individuals in our lives—it’s not possible to see all these attributes at the same time, but sporadically and in different people. In the same way it is not possible to draw a full picture of God and his 99 attributes in one word, but when one dwells upon these together, we may discover beauty, as shown by calligraphy pieces that endeavour to give us a picture of beauty and love as completion and joining of all of God’s 99 names together.
This work was made using conversations I have had online with loved ones, ranging from missed calls to appreciation and support from friends, and texts left over from a loved one who passed away.
The work models an environment on Blender using these messages to convey how it feels to be submerged in human love. For one transient moment (at frame number 99 in my rendering engine), the text messages come together in a loose way to form the word ‘Allah’ (around the 5 second mark) before dispersing again. The moment is ephemeral and unnoticeable unless one knows what they are looking for and they revisit, as a reflection of the nature of the search for divinity in human love and how the challenge with the 99 attributes of God is indeed being able to see them all at the same time and feeling all of them simultaneously.
