Studio Beithak @ 59 Rivoli, Paris
“Beithak” in South Asian tradition refers to a “a sit-down gathering”—it is a musical performance in an intimate environment where musicians perform in close proximity to the audience. At the 59 Rivoli, during my artist residency, I re-contextualised the traditional baithak to contemporary times, mixing an experimental venues and audiences with traditional beithak culture. The 59 was a former artist squat, known for crazy parties in the early 2000s. I converted half of my artist studio into floor seating, using pillows, mood lighting, and my tableaus in the background forming a scenography and a utopian environment. Guests were served drinks that mixed tea and South Asian perfumes (cardamom, jasmine, etc.) with standard alcoholic beverages. Baithak music performance started and the audience was invited to sit down and enjoy the music for an hour.
