An evening with Sultana’s Dream @Asian American Writers’ Workshop, New York City
We presented a night of storytelling by South Asian creatives in partnership with the South Asian Womxn’s Creative Collective in New York City. Our curated lineup of storytellers shared poetry, song, and memories on the intersection of femininity, identity, and existing in public spaces. The event took place in conjunction with mine and Tessa Makai’s then upcoming installation in Karachi that summer, entitled “We sin-phool women,” featuring sculptures created from motia (Arabian jasmine flowers) to explore the marginalization of femininity in South Asian public spaces, evoked by the 1905 Bengali feminist utopian tale, Sultana’s Dream.
