Absence of light
Faiz Ahmed Faiz is one of the most prominent Urdu language poets. His work features imagery playing with light and also darkness, especially in the poems that he produced during the years that he was imprisoned for his ideas. I turned to Faiz because I myself was going through a time when I felt an absence of light and lightness in my being.

Through this work, I embody experiencing light and the absence of it through audio and words, and play with the ways in which you can experience and interact with a poem. I added English to make texts more accessible both to a Pakistani and a foreign audience, taking away, to an extent, that intimidation that comes with facing our poetry.

My paternal family has a history of being involved with regional poetry; my dad used to write during the 90’s and his aunt is a scholar of Urdu poetry and prose, who is also the voice behind the audio of my project.
